The Microsoft Word Documents extension is. Basic document types in Word

A file format, also called a file type, is file information for a computer. Thanks to this information, the computer knows approximately what is inside the file and “understands” which program to open it in.

So that the computer understands what type of file it is and what program to open it in, the extension is indicated after the name.

An extension is a few letters or numbers after the dot in the name.

The picture shows a file with the mp3 extension. The computer “knows” about it that it is a music file, and it must be opened in a player program. The picture of the file matches the picture of the program that opens it. An experienced computer user already understands from this icon alone which program this file will open in and what type it belongs to.

There are, for example, text files. This means that the content of such files is text, and they are opened in a program for working with text. There are music and video files, that is, their contents are music and video, and they open in players. Also often found are graphic files - photographs and pictures. There are many more types. Each of them has its own icon, or rather, the icon of the program installed on the computer in which it opens.

Let me remind you that the computer determines the file type by its extension. So, many computers are configured in such a way that the file extension is not shown. It's very convenient!

To make this happen for you, open any folder and click on the “Service” inscription (at the top of the window). From the list, select "Folder Options..." or "Folder Options...".

If there is no “Service” item at the top of the window, then click on the “Start” button and open “Control Panel”. Among the icons, find and open “Folder Options” (Appearance and Personalization - Folder Options).

A window will open. Click on the "View" tab (top).

Check the box "Hide extensions for known file types" and click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window.

By the way, in the same way you can configure your computer so that, on the contrary, it does not hide, but shows file extensions.

Table of the most common extensions:

Extension Example
exe programs ACDSee9.exe
com Command.com
doc documents (Microsoft Word) Letter.doc
xls tables (Microsoft Excel) Catalog.xls
txt text documents text.txt
ppt presentations (Microsoft PowerPoint) Presentation.ppt
htm Internet pages Book.htm
html Book.html
hlp reference Windows.hlp
bmp drawing, photography Figure.bmp
jpg Photo.jpg
tif Nature.tif
gif Figure.gif
mp3 Music Song.mp3
mpeg video Film.mpeg
avi Clip.avi
zip ZIP archive Abstract.zip
rar WinRAR archive Abstract.rar

Important! If your computer is set up so that extensions are shown, then when you change the file name, leave the extension as is. That is, change the file name to the dot. If you change the extension, the file may no longer open. Remember this!

Hello! Lately, a lot of people have been contacting me asking for help in opening a file in the form of a Word document, since users have not been able to do this. When I went to their computer, I noticed that most users try to open a document with the extension “ docm" As you know, this document format contains macros and is intended for new versions of Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2013. And since many people have an outdated version of Office, this created certain inconveniences.

When I answered users like this, they immediately asked the question, how can it be opened? Well, of course I started telling you that it only costs change file extension to standard and everything will work. But, before I had time to finish this, the question was asked again about how to change this extension. Of course, I told the user how this is done, without missing even the smallest details, how it is done and why, the file opened and the users were satisfied.

So, after this I decided to tell you, how can you change the file extension of Windows 7, 8, 10, because I'm sure not everyone knew about it.

What you need to change the file type extension

Before you start changing and editing the format of your files, I recommend making a backup copy of them, putting it on drive D, and only after that proceed directly to following my recommendations. Why is this necessary? For example, in order to prevent further damage to documents, since there is a chance that after changing the file extension, it may not open, so the proverb: “Forewarned is forearmed” is suitable here.

So, as you know, by default in operating systems the file format is not displayed, because it is simply hidden from inexperienced users, so that they do not harm themselves. Therefore, I think you have already guessed that we should allow the file type extension to be displayed.

Method number 1:

Method number 2:

I have already written in more detail on this topic in a separate article entitled: “”.

Changing the file extension

There is nothing complicated about changing the file type extension; in principle, by following the steps that I will now show, you will see for yourself.

Having opened access to displaying the file format, click on our file, in my example it will be a Word document " TEST.docm", and call the context menu, where we select " Rename».

Now for example I need to rename from docm V docx, for this I go to the name of the file extension, which is located after the dot and indicate there “ docx" After changing the file extension, the document should open in its normal form.

As I said, everything is so easy that you probably haven’t even had time to strain yourself yet. Also, in a similar way, you can change the extension of files such as: “ 7zip" on " RAR" etc. In general, if you can’t open documents in this way, then just change the file extension and you will be happy.

Changing the file extension using the example document.docm

If the .WORD file is known to your system, then you can open it by double-clicking the mouse or pressing ENTER. This operation will launch applications associated with the .WORD file installed on the system. If the system encounters a file for the first time and there are no corresponding associations, the action will end with the system prompting you to find the appropriate software on your computer or on the Internet.

Sometimes it happens that the wrong program is assigned to serve the .WORD file type. This happens as a result of the action of hostile programs such as viruses or malware, but most often it is the result of an application being mistakenly combined with the .WORD file extension. If, when servicing a new .WORD file type, we specify the wrong program to the system, the system will mistakenly recommend its use whenever a file of this type is encountered. In this case, you should try to select the appropriate application again. Right-click on the .WORD file, and then select from the menu the option "Open With..." then "Choose default program". Now select one of the installed applications from the above list and try again.

Programs that will open the .WORD file

Manual editing of the Windows Registry

If our system cannot cope with the .WORD extension and all automatic and semi-automatic methods of teaching it this art have failed, we are left with manual editing of the Windows registry. This registry stores all information related to the operation of our operating system, including the connection of file extensions with programs for servicing them. Team REGEDIT inscribed in the window “search for programs and files” or "launch in the case of older versions of the operating system, it gives us access to the registry of our operating system. All operations performed in the registry (even not very complex ones regarding the .WORD file extension) have a significant impact on the operation of our system, so before making any modifications, you should make sure that a copy of the current registry is made. The section we are interested in is the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. The following instructions show, step by step, how to modify the registry, specifically the registry entry containing information about the .WORD file.

Step by step

  • Click “start” button
  • In the “find programs and files” window (in older versions of Windows this is the “Run” window), enter the command “regedit” and then confirm the operation with the “ENTER” key. This operation will launch the system registry editor. This tool will allow you not only to view existing records, but also to modify, add or delete them manually. Due to the fact that the Windows registry is key to its operation, all operations carried out on it should be performed judiciously and consciously. Carelessly removing or modifying an inappropriate key may permanently damage the operating system.
  • Using the ctr+F key combination or the Edit menu and the “Find” option, find the .WORD extension you are interested in by entering it in the search engine window. Confirm by pressing OK or using the ENTER key.
  • Backup copy. It is extremely important to create a backup copy of the registry before making any changes to it. Every change has an impact on the operation of our computer. In extreme cases, erroneous modification of the registry may result in the system being unable to restart.
  • The value you are interested in regarding the extension can be manually edited by changing the keys assigned to the found extension.WORD. In this place, you can also independently create the desired entry with the extension a.WORD if it is not in the registry. All available options are located in the handy menu (right mouse button) or in the "Edit" menu after placing the cursor in the appropriate place on the screen.
  • After you finish editing the entry for the .WORD extension, close the system registry. The introduced changes will take effect after restarting the operating system.

Get ready to welcome the alien! Let's say someone sends you a text file or document created in WordPerfect, or a Web page, or some special kind of file that has nothing to do with the Word format. Don't despair! If necessary, Word can open the file, examine it, and find a way to work with it. However, you also have to do something.

  1. Select a team File>Open.
  2. In the dropdown list File type specify the file format.

If you know what format the file is in, select it from the list. The most commonly used formats are listed below and the documents they store.

  • All Word documents- any document created in Word.
  • XML files. Documents presented in XML format.
  • All Web Pages- documents in HTML format or web pages that were saved to disk.
  • RTF text- a generally accepted format for exchanging documents developed in different word processors.
  • Text files- documents containing only text that were not formatted at all (not so long ago this format was used quite widely). It is known as the ADSP format, or MS DOS text format.
  • Recover text from any file is a very useful option that allows Word to extract text from any type of file. Use it when all other options cannot lead to the desired result.
  • WordPerfect (various versions/platforms)- used to read documents created in WordPerfect.
  • Works (various versions/platforms)- used to read documents created in Microsoft Woks.
  • Word (various versions/platforms)- used to read documents created in early versions of Word and on Macintosh computers.

If you specify a specific file type, Word displays only files that match that format in the Open Document dialog box. All you have to do is specify which file to open.

Note

If you do not know what format the file you need was created in, select the option from the drop-down list All files, and Word will display them.

  1. Find the required text file.

Use the dialog box controls to locate the file you are looking for on your hard drive (see section in this chapter).

  1. Click once on the text file name.
  2. Click the button Open.

The "foreign" file will appear on the screen as a regular Word document, and you can edit it.

  • In some cases, you can try setting formatting for files of a certain format.
  • Word has a special dialog box File Conversion. It is used to preview a document for which a specific format has been selected. This window opens after double clicking on the file name. However, you will get the most benefit from this window by clicking on the button in it OK.
  • If in the dialog box Opening a document the name of the file you need is missing, and you know for sure that it is contained in this folder, try typing its name in the File name field and clicking on the Open button.
  • Word remembers the file type! When you re-enter the dialog box Opening a document, files of the type that were installed earlier in the list will be provided at your disposal File type. Therefore, if you need to open a Word document, and previously opened an HTML document, be sure to select from the list File type element Word Documents. Otherwise, you will most likely see something completely different from what you expected on the screen.
  • Additional file types and filters for converting them can sometimes be found on the Word (or Office) installation disk. To install them, run the program Setup on this disk and select the installation mode for new filters only.
